Helping Children Develop Their Leadership Skills

Some people are born natural leaders. These people are easy to identify. They are almost always successful, they are self-confident, and other people tend to gravitate towards them. Just because a person is not a natural born leader, it doesn't mean that they never will be. Leadership skills are something everyone can and should develop.
However just because a person isn't born with a natural knack for leading a group, doesn't mean that they will forever be doomed to follow. The skills needed to be a leader can be developed. Even if a person will never be in a situation where they need to take charge, when a person knows they are capable of leading, they will be more self confident and relaxed.
If the child is shy, helping them work on becoming a leader will help pull them out of their shell. Boy/girl scouts and 4-H are excellent organizations for teaching kids how to become phenomenal leaders.
A strongly developed sense of curiosity isn't just a sign of an adventuress child, but also one who will be a good leader. Parents should encourage their child's curiosity, and also teach them to seek their own answers. Instead of just giving a child the answers, parent's should help the child to find them. The more enthusiasm a parent shows, the more the child's curiosity will develop.
Even though a parent wants their child to be a leader, they should also want their child to be a good leader. One of the problems that many people who are natural leaders tend to run into is a tendency to take over. Part of being a good leader is learning how to listen to all sides of an argument and than consider the pros and cons of both sides.
Good leaders are always prepared. When a leader is arguing a point, they need to anticipate what their opponent is going to say, and be prepared to rebut. Preparedness is not an easy thing to teach a child, particularly when they are younger. The best thing a parent can do is try to encourage their child to be organized and to take a few minutes to think before they leap into action.
Leaders have a tendency to micro-mange. It is important that a child learn that part of being a good leader is knowing when to delegate. There are going to be times when they can't do everything and they need to hand certain tasks over to the other people in a group. Organizations like FFA are excellent for teaching delegation and working in groups.
It isn't easy to teach a child how to become a strong and compassionate leader. Helping them develop leadership skills is going to be something that you have to work on every single day, but in the end, when your child is a self-confident, well adjust adult you will be grateful.
