Doctors And Community Effort: A Symbiotic Activity
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
It was only very recently that residents in one of America's major cities realized that doctors also need their community as it had been well-known for a while that their community needs doctors. When it comes to any recruitment effort, it is a known fact that presenting the community as desirable and ideal enables success in recruitment. Potential new doctors would want to make sure that they and their families can avail of good housing, education, socio-cultural opportunities in a safe environment that can cater to their needs.
The main priority of the administration, board of trustees and staff of a hospital is recruiting competent new physicians. Obtaining community effort is the greatest kind of recruiting and this has been known to recruiting hospitals through their vast experiences. Careful observation and study have revealed what areas of health care delivery still need to be improved, and the recruitment process will continue until these needs have been taken care of.
One of the major problems of most rural areas in America is their community's lack of healthcare practitioners. These rural areas have been declared as medically unaided communities, according to a recently published federal document. Such designates a point-rating set criteria in each of the categories such as number of those living below poverty, number of those beyond the age of 65, the rate of infant deaths and the ratio of one doctor to every thousand of the constituents.
Specialists in internal medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics and family medicine are the ones who fit the definition of primary care physicians. Knowing what forms of health services are in demand must be decided on by the staff and board members after this has been established. At present, some hospitals are making the recruitment of additional physicians in obstetrics gynecology top priority. Emergency room and family medicine doctors are also in demand.
Rolling out the carpet and engaging the resources and assets of both the community and the hospital must be shown for the full advantage of the physicians is one of the most rigorous processes in doctor recruitment. Notices and advertisements in major medical publications is the first step in effective hiring as it will reach a wide scope of physicians throughout the country. Luring fresh graduates and residents from medical schools in the area can be done by sending letters to these schools. Staying in touch with the community is required of the local residents known to take up medical studies and the colleagues of the local physicians are constantly phoned and contacted.
The town is shown to the interested physician once he expresses interest in joining. The doctor is treated to lunch, as he is requested to accept the overnight accommodation so he can be oriented about the hospital and introduced to its staff. The orientation happens within while a tour around the hospital takes place, but there are times when the hospital crew throw parties to make their potential new doctors feel welcome and special.
The physician is shown what support services exist at the hospital such as the pathology lab or radiology lab, and told that the hospital will make every possible effort to purchase equipment necessary to establish a new specialty. The physician will also be advised that the hospital will assist him in finding adequate office space, good insurance packages as well as a chance to continue his education.
But it does not end here for the recruiter's offers must be more than just the hospital-related perks. The physician and the spouse must be put in contact with the principal of the school their children will be going to and arrangements made for the children to spend some time there.
Introduction may be made to local bankers who can advise them of mortgage and loan opportunities and to real estate brokers who will be apprised of their housing needs. The board of trustees and their staff may still not be able to achieve their goals. While they can point the potential recruit to the right direction, it is up to the members of the community to carry on with the recruitment effort by acting as resource people and answering any questions the new doctor may have.
