Turn An IP Camera Into A Security Guard - Connect Wi-Fi Connectivity

This article is the third of several articles describing how to change a webcam, also recognized as an IP camera, or an Internet camera into a complete surveillance and security measure. Add lights, motion detectors, outdoor enclosures, wireless adaptors and even handy Internet cards to an Internet (IP) camera and you get an ingenious, yet cost-efficient electronic security personnel. These can be perfect for watching out on vacation homes and RV's, remote work sites, faraway businesses, such as quarries or power stations, stored equipment, or even as remote outdoor webcams. The 1st step was to set up a Passive InfraRed (PIR) detector to the camera to spark it to transmit alerts and to upload pictures or videos of the activities that triggered the detector. Step 2 is to setup a floodlight to deter would-be mischievousness or stealing. The third step involves adding a wireless module so that the cameras can be installed without the need for data or video cabling.

A webcam is a video camera which sends its images in up to date time to a computer or computer network, frequently via USB, ethernet or Wi-Fi. Their most common use is the formation of video links, letting computers to act as videophones or videoconference stations. This common utilization as a camera for the web hands the webcam its name. Other popular uses are for security surveillance and computer vision. Webcams typically have a lens, an image sensor, and some support electronics. Various lenses are available, the most common in consumer-grade webcams being a plastic lens that can be screwed in and out to set the camera's focus. Fixed focus lenses, which do not have features for adjustment, are also available. As a camera system's depth of field is good for small imager formats and is great for lenses with a large f-number (small aperture), the systems used in webcams have sufficiently large depth of field that the utilization of a fixed focus lens does not impair image sharpness a lot. Image sensors can be CMOS or CCD, the former being dominant for low-cost cameras, but CCD cameras do not necessarily outperform CMOS-based cameras in the cheap price range. Most consumer webcams have the capability of providing VGA-resolution video at a frame rate of 30 frames every second. A lot of newer devices can make videos in -megapixel resolutions.

Support electronics check the image from the detector and beam it to a local host computer via Ethernet cable or wireless bridge, providing a wireless connection to the server computer. If a local server computer is not available, the cameras can be linked to the Internet straight, using the general wireless Internet cards, such as 3G and 4G cards from suppliers such as Verizon and Sprint. Some more powerful cameras include incorporated processors that add several features, such as motion detection transmission, email transmitting, regular transmission of still pictures and videos. Some can even include still photos and video images within email alerts. A lot of webcams own built-in microphones.

Add wireless connection (WiFi) to the camera. A wireless network usually is not totally wireless because some piece of equipment will most likely be connected to the internet source by wire (cat 5 or cat 6). That link depends on your equipment and the service type. Some internet modems have wireless router capability "built-in" but in that case the modem will still be wired to your wall or where ever the internet comes into the room. You'll also be connected to the power socket. What you receive depends on what type of service you obtain, who provides it, and what equipment is supplied.

The effective distance between the cameras and the wireless Internet access point varies because of surroundings and ability of the equipment. Currently the range can be up to 300 ft for some gadgets without "extra help" but on average a lot of standard systems are rated as up to one hundred fifty ft. Closer commonly means greater signal effectiveness and video quality, but not all the time. Other factors like metal I-beams, cordless phones, wireless remote controllers and other electronic devices, among other things, can affect the quality of a signal. There are wireless extenders/relays accessible that can stretch the range of a wireless signal. Some are in the form of a high-powered antenna, some are similar to wireless adapters and are connected into an electrical outlet along the route to a computer distantly located. So the device relays the wireless signal to the various computers. Wireless connection can be modified to computer peripherals, such as an IP, or Internet camera. This configuration lets the cameras to be placed hundreds of feet away from the Internet access point. One such camera is supplied by Offsite Commander Systems.
