Selecting A Control Room Operator
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
There are a lot of things that you need to think about when you hire new staff. This is much more relevant when you hire security staff and much more so when you employ a control room operator. Let's have a look at a few of the things that you need to think about whenever you set out to select a control room operator for your security system.
Past work experience
When you look at the previous work experience of a prospect for your control room operator position you need to have a look at what jobs they've held. You do not really want to hire someone who has never been entrusted with some type of responsibility. Your average vehicle guard or front desk security is not going to do the job. You'll need someone who was responsible for managing a team of people or who has already been a control room operator. You need to know that they will have the ability to learn the ropes really quickly. You also require someone with the strength of charabter to stand up to pressure from peers and to make sure that the security of the building is never compromised.
References
Your whole building's security is going to rest in the hands of the control room operator. You don't want to have someone there that has been fired for being dishonest or has been disloyal or something negative like that. You have to be sure that you can rely on them. Make sure that you get references from all of their previous employers. If the company is not willing to provide a reference then you ought to be suspicious of that. If you are not in a position to get in touch with anyone at the company, even at the request of the individual you are considering that should raise a red flag too.
Criminal records
Any person with a criminal record would not make a good control room operator. They have already proven themselves to be inclined to break the law and you need your own security to be properly managed and any anomalies need to be reported honestly, regardless of what they are. Even if your own candidate attempts to explain their criminal history away you should be wary of employing them.
Your company's security is one of the most significant things that should be looked after. You have to be sure that you'll be able to absolutely trust the person that you put in control of that system. If there is any doubt in your mind or if there is something about the person you are interviewing that you don't like or even trust it could be better for you to look at hiring someone else.
It's not always easy to obtain the right kind of person though. This is why there are businesses out there which will contract a control room operator out to you. They have already done all the checks and found the individual to be reliable. You can always complain and have the person they offer you changed if they do not work out for you.
