High Cholesterol - It Doesn't Have to Carry over to High Insurance Premiums

These days, there are a lot of foods that boast of being "low in cholesterol" or "heart healthy." Sadly, it seems that the tastiest, fastest, and cheapest foods could very well boast the opposite; fast food and other foods that people love to eat are often high in fat and cholesterol. Having high cholesterol can lead to serious health risks, particularly heart disease. Heart disease is still the number one agent of death in America. It's no wonder that many insurance companies see applicants with hypercholesterolemia as being "high-risk." But if you have hypercholesterolemia, there are steps you can take to making sure that you get the right insurance coverage.

First of all, do your best to get your high cholesterol under control. Simple changes to your diet may be all that is necessary to bring your cholesterol back down to normal levels. While you may initially have a hard time sticking to a healthy diet and exercising regularly, one day, you will come to enjoy the taste of healthy food, and you'll learn to find exercise rejuvenating. As an added bonus, you will most likely lose weight, making you look and feel better. The bonus alone is worth the change to your diet and exercise regimen.

By living a healthier lifestyle, you could improve your cholesterol levels and prove to the insurance companies that you're not a bad risk at all. But you'll still need to shop carefully if you're going to find the best rates. Ultimately, you'll need to get three to five quotes from different insurance companies in order to compare rates and make sure that you're getting adequate coverage. You may have high cholesterol, but that doesn't automatically mean that you should have to pay high insurance premiums. A little comparison shopping can save you a lot of money in the long run.

And, once you get insurance quotes, you should make sure that the coverage you're being offered is adequate to meet the medical needs associated with having high blood pressure. You may need to take medications to keep your cholesterol low, so you'll want to make sure that those medications are included in your prescription drug coverage. You will also likely need to see a doctor regularly to monitor your condition. And, in extreme cases, you may even require surgery to open clogged arteries. If you make sure that you have adequate coverage, you'll have peace of mind.
