Making The Right Choice Between Gold Bullion And Gold Shares
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
When it comes to looking for wise investment methods, people still prefer buying gold. It seems that tastes have not changed with the passing of time, but the spectrum of opportunities for potential investors has certainly become wider. Of course, the old fashioned way of buying and selling gold bullion is still there, just as simple and safe as ever. But for those who are not so keen on actually seeing the yellow metal in its physical form and fell the need of a touch of risk in their lives, gold shares are the best option.
The forms in which the bullion can be bought, as well as the advantages of investing in jewelry, bars or coin are common knowledge. They are easy to be carried around or converted into money, they do not depreciate and that makes them a safe way of investment, etc. But, in what gold shares are concerned, simplicity is no longer the name of the game.
In order to become share owners, we are given several options. The first one we can think of is investing in a gold mining company. When the gold price follows an ascendant curve, it is expected that the profits of the company will behave in the same manner and, subsequently, the price of shares rise too. Yet, such a venture could prove extremely risky as there are so many factors which can influence on our investment. Events or elements which are beyond our control, such as the company's management or potential environmental, political or economic risks can affect the activity of the mining company of our choice.
If investing in individual gold shares can be regarded as unsafe due to their volatile and quite risky nature, we can always go for either a gold exchange traded fund (ETF) or a gold mutual fund. As we are about to see, the two investment vehicles are different one from another in some essential aspects.
The term ETF refers to a corporate entity which holds and insures gold bullion for which it issues its investors shares. Thus, by going for this type of investment, we can become share owners in the most direct way, without having the actual gold products in our hands. On the other hand, gold mutual funds are collective ventures which focus their attention on the entire industry rather than just a single company. The main advantage behind such a choice is that it's not only the profits of just a single company we can rely on, but the ones of the entire gold market.
We can conclude by saying that in the end it's all about the type of investor we are, this is the determinative factor when trying to choose between buying gold bullion or gold shares. For those of us who do not like taking risks, it's pretty obvious that the highly speculative nature of shares is far away from convincing us to invest in such items. After all, there are no guarantees whatsoever that a gold price rise will determine for the share price to go up as well. Wise choices are never easy to make, but, like so many things in this world, they can be learned. As long as we are willing to ask for their help, professionals can teach us the secrets of buying gold bullion or gold shares, even in times of recession.
