Woodworking Measuring Tools Are Critical To Any Project
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
There are numerous kinds of tools you will need when doing woodworking projects, depending on what you're making. Some tools are best for projects of a general nature, and others are required for specialized jobs. The basic woodworking tools you can't do without are those used for cutting, shaping, assembly, and finishing. The simplest of these are woodworking measuring tools, yet they are also entirely essential. Without them, you won't be able to make accurate cuts.
Rulers are one of the tools used in woodworking for the purpose of measuring. The typical kinds of rulers are the tape measure, the zigzag ruler and the folding type. Tape measures are most useful in the process of measuring long pieces of wood. When shopping for a ruler, make sure the material it's made of is sturdy and has the standard markings. It also requires a locking mechanism to keep it in place. Keep your ruler in good condition by cleaning it every time you use it. This is especially important if it's made of metal, which is susceptible to rusting.
In woodworking, a square is utilized to create an angle. Similar to rulers, there are many varieties of this product. These also have markings and are utilized in measuring square and true joints. Miter squares are used for 45 degree angles. Try squares, which are L-shaped, are used for 90 degree angles. For either 45 or 90 degree angles, you'd use a combination square. Wooden squares are cheaper than metal, but are somewhat less accurate. However, they're usually good enough for most home woodworking projects.
Some other measuring tools are gauges, dividers and compasses. You'll also require an instrument for marking your measurements, and in many cases a sharp pencil is adequate. Some woodworkers, though, prefer using a marking knife owing to its higher degree of accuracy.
It's to your benefit to take good care of your woodworking tools. Clean them after each use and check them for rust or rot. Remember that the success of your project depends upon them.
