Choosing The Right Guinea Pig Hutch
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The first thing you should look into when you plan to have guinea pigs as pets is the place where they will stay. They are better placed indoors to safeguard them against the ever changing weather and other animals which might harm them. The guinea pig hutch should be placed in a safe and comfortable place.
The right size for a hutch with 2 or more occupants is 10.5 square feet. This should be spacious enough to make them comfortable and have space to play. They are very social creatures and they play a lot. So make enough room for them.
You should also look into the flooring of the hutch. Choose one with a solid bottom. One which is made with plastic is better than one made of wire because a wire mesh floor can harm their feet. Wooden floors are also not advisable to use because wood can rot and it is messier to clean after. The door should also be big enough for your hand to reach out and move around inside the hutch.
The ideal measurement for a guinea pig hutch with two or more occupants is ten and a half square feet. This would have plenty of room for them to move around and play. It is vital that they should have room to play so that they will not get too fat. An overweight guinea pig may have health problems. The hutch should have enough room and space for the feeding bowls and water containers.
They also love to hide and play with things, give them playthings like rocks, balls, etc. Provide a nook inside the hutch to provide a place for the guineas to hide and be alone. Clean the hutch regularly, this means cleaning it at least once a week to prevent diseases and infections caused by unsanitary surroundings.
