Motorcycle goggles have recently seen a resurgence of popularity among motorcycle aficionados. Although they have been worn by many years by those who favor Harley's, recent improvements in style and performance have made them popular among those who rides the newer styles of motorcycles. Originally created for the pilots who flew in open cockpit planes, they now offer not only protection to the wearer, but also a sense of style.
These days, the lenses of goggles are most often made of polycarbonate, which is very strong and resists scratches and fogging up. You can get them in almost any shape imaginable, from the traditional squared off shape to wrap arounds and even very small types that resemble swimming goggles. The lenses also come in varying shades that offer protection from the sun.
You can now also get goggles that are fitted with prescription lenses. This does away with the hassle of trying to get goggles to fit snugly over your glasses while still allowing you to see clearly. They even come in bifocals so that you can see both the road and your instrument panel clearly.
The straps used to hold the lenses on your face have changed quite a bit too. Originally they were made from leather or canvas, which although sturdy, did not always offer the most comfortable fit. If you choose, you can still get goggles made of those materials, but there are other options as well. Many goggle straps are now made of a nylon/spandex combination. This makes the goggles much lighter weight and ensures that they fit snugly while still being comfortable.
There are styles of goggles designed to be worn under a helmet's visor, but most people who choose to ride with this type of helmet really see no need for motorcycle goggles. Goggles are most often worn by those who ride with visorless helmets or no helmet at all.
Many people choose to wear sunglasses when riding their motorcycles, but goggles may be a much better idea. Not only will they stay snugly in place but they will continue to offer protection for your eyes even if you are involved in an accident.
If you are a motorcycle rider, particularly one who chooses to ride without a helmet, you would be wise to invest in a pair of goggles. Not only will they prevent damage to you eyes from debris or insects that may be in the air, but you will look good doing it.
