Beginner Skateboarders - Are You Making These Mistakes?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Skateboarders who know what they're doing make it all look incredibly easy. Right? It seems like all you do is push yourself off and then stay balanced. Hey, surfing looks like a no-brainer. Stand-up on a board, on a wave. But if you try it, you'll immediately discover skateboarding only "looks" easy. You must practice and develop your skills if you want to know how to do the tricks you think are so cool. Here's just a few skateboarding tips that will help you become a better skater, faster.
It's smart to use the right skating gear. It can feel awkward to wear the safety gear: elbow/knee pads, helmut, shin guards. After you start skating, not a lot of time will pass before you're glad you're wearing it. If you're totally new, remember: falling time will be greater than skating time. Ok? Properly stopping your board will most likely give you more troubles than you want. In time, you may decide to lose some of the protective gear. But it's still a great idea to keep the helmut on. You can have a serious fall, so the helmut really is a good idea.
Don't have any worries about skateboarding slowly when you're learning. You'll see a lot of beginner skateboarders trying to do those cool tricks before they really have the proper skills. The end result is usually the skater getting hurt. Successfully skateboarding a couple blocks is not the same as being able to safely perform a trick. Hopping with the skateboard is not as easy as you may realize. Start skating slowly and try to be steady, then when you're ready go for longer distances. Teach yourself how to start-off fast and stop smoothly with no falls. When you get to the point where you can smoothly skate around the streets for a distance and move around people walking around, then that would be a good time to think about tricks.
You'll need to learn the skaters lingo, and it's good to find out the different kinds of skateboards used. You'll find lots of different kinds of boards, they're not all identical. It's a good idea to learn the differences and what each one means to a skater. It's really helpful to be able to understand the meaning behind certain skating terms. If you do that you'll be able to ask for and get help with something.
You know there's more to skating than standing and riding a flat piece of board. Skateboards are a valid way to travel short distances like going to work in the cities, and they're really fun to ride. You'll learn better and faster if you'll only open-up your mind to learning.
