To find the right fishing bait it takes time and experience for whatever fish you wish to catch. It is hard to decide when you have a gambit of bait to choose from such as, artificial, live, or dead baits. By using a variety of bait you can virtually guarantee greater success when facing your underwater nemesis whether it be a large mouth bass or that elusive catfish.
If you are out to catch that record breaking carp, it would be in your favor to remember that they are partial to sweet tasting baits. I am speaking of homemade style baits, the type that is normally created from pellets, biscuits, and of course bread. I personally like to add that little extra something to my homemade baits, so I add fish oil and some gummy candy. Yep, you heard me right - I use gummy candy when fishing for carp, and catfish. You can also add bloodworms to the recipe to give it that little extra something.
If you plan on heading out to the ocean for a challenging day of fishing, you may want to bring along some prawns and shrimp, marine worms, squid and octopus, along with some yellowtail or even mackerel. Using a similar recipe that I shared with you for carp you can use dough balls mixed with fish oils, rotten fish, cheese, or any type of meat - the more it stinks the better it will do.
I am surprised at how little many anglers actually know about catfish and their habits. If you do not know anything but this one thing, it will help you tremendously when it comes to catching that award size catfish. Catfish are extremely picky eaters, and they are known for changing up their eating habits almost on a daily basis. What ever type of bait you have been using today will not necessarily work tomorrow. When it comes to any type of fish, especially catfish you need to switch it up frequently.
This is the part of the article that you have been waiting for. I am about to disclose to you my secret family catfish bait recipe. You should start off with some damp bread rolled up into little balls. Throughout this process you will want to keep the bread moist. Now add some night crawlers to the mix (sounds good enough to eat huh?) You can either buy the night crawlers or dig them up in your backyard. Personally I prefer to save a few bucks and dig them up myself.
Another great catfish bait trick that I like to use is chicken livers. Catfish will start a feeding frenzy over some the strong delightful odor of chicken livers. Because the chicken livers are so slippery it is recommended that you wear gloves to avoid cutting yourself while baiting the hook.
A big chunk of dead shad is always good for baiting for cats; shad are regularly found in the river channels where the catfish are found, so the bigger the chunk of shad, the bigger the catfish that will come knocking to take the bait.
You can make your own catfish bait out of just about anything as long as you start with some basic substances. A good idea is to start with dip bait, and just about anything that has a foul smelly odor to it i.e. old cheese, rotten meat, bloodworms - you can use just about anything that omits a foul odor.
