Different Approaches to the Heli-Ski Experience
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The sport of heli-skiing takes different approaches, depending on which continent?s model you decide to use. Most US and Canadian helicopter skiing outfits use the helicopter like a ski lift. They'll fly in and drop off skiers on the best spots throughout the day. The European model, however, takes a more wild approach. With them, the helicopter is pretty much like a taxi, so you can go anywhere. You ski the spots nobody has ever been before, the extremely wild places where the skiing is just perfect.
In the European version of heliskiing, the helicopter will take the skiers to an ideal peak, usually impossible to get to on foot so that you truly experience something wild. The group is then left to work their way back to the road on their own. This can sometimes involve mountaineering, though most of the way is downhill. European heli-ski is more of an authentic adventure.
Most US heliski may involve a helicopter, a far more adventurous option than the chair lift to be sure, but that's pretty much where the adventure stops. The reason people started heliskiing in the first place was to ski in areas nobody had ever been. What's the point of heli-skiing a section that has been hit by 25 skiers already that day. That's just slope skiing with a fancy helicopter ride thrown in.
Take that helicopter anywhere, however, and you're open to the true possibilities of heliski adventure. Winter in the wild is radically different from the winter you're used to at a ski resort. When you're out on a mountain with just your guide, your group, and the immense magic of endless white, the real possibilities of winter open up.
Breathtaking scenery is just begins the thrill of helicopter skiing. Ski pristine, virgin snow, and you'll really notice the difference. Forget that manufactured, highly replicated snow you get at the resorts. There's nothing like the real thing, untouched and pure. Perfect powder snow makes skiing seem like a dream. You can experience wild snow in a natural environment that steals the steam right off your breath.
Granted, nature's conditions aren't always ideal, but that's why you hire a guide in the first place. They know what to look for, which weather and temperature patterns make the perfect snow. The best time to go is early in the winter, as the cold temperatures create ideal conditions. Recrystalized snow that's almost like sugar create the most relaxed skiing descents. You just glide and let the gravity take you. Heliski offers total release in perfect nature for an adventure like you've never dreamed.
