Violin Lessons Online - Are Violin Lessons Online A Plague To Violin Teachers?
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Online violin lessons are the best thing that could happen to the violin community, at least as far as the student is concerned. You may not have heard of them because they aren't what most are traditionally used to.
Generally people go about learning an instrument by calling up a local music school and asking if they offer private lessons for your instrument. I doubt very seriously any of them would explain to you that while they charge $30 or more for a single lesson, that you could get hundreds of lessons online for the price of that one lesson, and these lessons work very well. You really think they'd be able to keep their jobs if this knowledge wasn't buried?
Unless you live next door to your violin teacher, you'll pay several times more than that price just for the gas to get you to your lessons during the course of your music education. That is why this opportunity has been hidden.
No violin teacher could make a living trying to keep up with such rates, but suppose they tried. Most aren't of the teaching caliber you'll find online. Usually a private half-hour lesson will run between 20 and 100 dollars, depending on the teacher's quality. Obviously there are some that cost slightly less, and some that cost substantially more, but for the realm of those that are easy to find, that's the standard range. This would mean the teachers with less experience would make about 20% of what a higher caliber teacher would. Applying this rate to online violin lessons would mean the average teacher would charge $6 to teach a student how to master the violin. If taking 20 students at a time, that's still not enough to make rent, and the teacher would be tied up for years.
So why would I yell about the opportunity if it could hurt these professionals? I love the music and think it is beautiful, so I will side with the student over the teacher. There are undoubtedly those who would love to learn how to play the violin, but can't afford quality instruction, so they never get the opportunity. Some who would play the violin, simple lack the time. Learning from home will free up some time for the student to play by eliminating the commute. I want to see more violinists, and there's no longer a question of where to find the best lesson quality or if it fits your budget.
