How To Manage Sunburn
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
Staying under the sun can be a lot of fun. However, prolonged exposure can be extremely hazardous to your health. Sunburns can result from inadequate preparation. If you get this often, you double your chances of acquiring skin cancer later. How do you deal with this?
First, keep in mind that if you take a few simple precautions, you can avoid days of pain later. To avoid sunburn, don't go out in the sun. If that's not easy for you to do, put on a good sunscreen to shield your skin. This has numerous kinds of SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Get a product with the highest SPF for solid protection. An SPF of 45 or more is ideal if you have fair skin. Waterproof sunblock is another alternative if you prefer water sports. Always wear a hat and loose clothes to stop the suns rays.
For pain, use aloe or another cooling agent. You can get this inexpensive remedy at many stores. Choose a product with aloe at the top of the list of ingredients and check the expiration date since aloe loses its healing properties with time. When applied immediately, aloe will turn your sunburn into a tan, meaning there will be less peeling of the dead skin or none at all. If you want to save even more, simply look for an aloe vera plant and break open a leaf. Apply the gel to the sunburn to soothe the burn and moisturize the skin.
A cool shower can also reduce heat and make you more comfortable. Soak in the water and rinse gently. Never use soap on burned areas since this can remove natural oils that can help your skin heal. After bathing, wear loose clothes and stay out of the sun until your sunburn heals. If you like, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. For stronger pain relief, consult a physician.
Finally, always take lots of water to stop dehydration. Steer clear of alcoholic beverages since they may worsen dehydration. Likewise, if you choose to tan in a bed, make sure that the bed is properly maintained and working properly to avoid problems down the road.
