Port Alberni, British Columbia: A City Outdoors
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
The city of Port Alberni, in British Columbia, Canada, is located at the head of the Alberni Inlet, on Vancouver Island. Situated in the Alberni Valley, the city has a population of nearly 18,000 and houses many attractions: Mount Arrowsmith, Della Falls, Sproat Lake, Cathedral Grove (an old growth rainforest), as well as a number of historic sites.
The city has plenty of sights to see in addition to a host of opportunities for outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, kayaking and other water sports, and of course fishing. Referred to as "the salmon capital of the world", Port Alberni's waters hold five types of salmon and steelhead and the ocean inlets also have halibut. Visitors can take advantage of the city's many fishing lodges, outfitters, and guides.
With temperatures ranging from a low of -0.5C in January to a high of 25.2C in August, the temperate climate explains why many of Port Alberni's residents and visitors are outdoorsy types; for most of the year, you can stay outdoors quite comfortably! With the beauty of the natural environment (the scenic ocean inlets, the networks of streams and rivers brimming with fish, the glassy lakes, cascading waterfalls, and towering mountains and old growth forests), why would you WANT to be indoors?
Port Alberni has a unique layout due to its two official city centres (it formerly held a "twin city" status), and the creeks and ravines that bisect the land. The area of current development, known as "North Port" was previously the city of Alberni, anchored to Highway 4. "South Port", also known as "Uptown", is located 3 km to the South on Gertrude Street and 3rd Avenue and was the former city of Port Alberni.
Port Alberni's mining and logging industries founded the city, historically, and natural resources and the rich forests still play formidable roles in its contemporary economy and culture. Port Alberni's many attractions add to Pacific Rim Tourism.
