Uniforms of popular teams are sold in the market worldwide and in huge quantities though without company logos. The merchandising of these team uniforms generates billions of dollars worldwide.

Origin of Uniforms

Since time immemorial, sportspersons have worn some kind of garment or accessory to identify themselves from other sports participants. The trend of sports uniforms can be credited to the human practice of assigning different signs, symbols and colors to signify different countries, kingdoms, regions, etc. These different colors, symbols and signs were used as means of identification and also to lend some sort of identity to these nations, regions and kingdoms. Though these signs and symbols have been popular since ancient times, the trend of team uniforms started at the turn of the 20th century. The first ever sports uniform was worn in 1849 by a baseball team of New York called Knickerbockers. Though various European clubs had been wearing uniforms since the late 1800s, Knickerbockers were the first ones to wear them officially.

Sports Uniforms: Advertising Vehicles

Sports uniforms are used as vehicles of advertising. Many big companies display their logos on the uniforms of big national and international teams so as to advertise their products. As the games played by these teams are watched by numerous spectators, the companies have a greater chance of getting their logos and company name noticed by the spectators. These team uniforms are one of the biggest sources of revenue nowadays for companies and advertising agencies. As there is stiff competition in the market between big brands and companies, the best and easiest way to advertise your product is to sponsor a team and use their uniforms as your advertising billboard.
