Feeling Depressed After A Break Up? 3 Tips To Survive
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
If you've made it here, it's a pretty safe bet that someone dumped you recently. I only wish that our first meeting wasn't under such a dark cloud. I know just how bad all those feelings can be when you've just come out of a relationship. It can seem like the end of the world when a relationship falls apart, especially if the two of you were very close.
It's no surprise that when a relationship end that you often end up feeling depressed or sad afterward, but I'd like to share a few tips that can help you cope with things.
Depression After Break Up Tip #1 - Allow Yourself to Feel Blue.
Feeling unhappy after being dumped are completely normal. Breakups are painful, and its okay to feel sad if you're going through one. Open yourself to experiencing all the feelings that you are going through right now. In the long run it isn't good for you to bottle up your feelings. Eventually these feelings will come out and chances are good that it's not going to be at an opportune time or place.
Your emotions should be allowed to come out in their own time. Life will return to normal a lot faster and you'll feel much better if you simply don't repress your emotions.
Depression After Break Up Tip #2 - Find How to Release Your Feelings in a Positive Way
If you and your ex were very close then you will no doubt feel a huge void left by the break up once you are finished with the crying and hurt. It is a huge help if you can find something to do that will get you out of a rut.
I was dumped and I made the decision to take up painting. Once the painting started there was no limit to the release of pent up frustration that had inflicted me. You don't need to be great at the skill. The main thing that you need to keep in mind is that it's not about creating something fantastic but only that you are doing something different to take you mind off things and to give your emotions a healthy outlet.
You can try looking at doing other things if you don't fancy painting. The key factor is that it releases your feelings.
Depression After Break Up Tip #3 - Plan More Activities
You will often feel very fragile when you are going through a breakup and at first you might want to just stay at home and eat junk food or watch sad movies to ease your pain. In order to increase your chances of getting over depression as fast as you can, this probably isn't going to do much good for you.
By doing things to take you mind off the pain you will be more likely to get your life moving in the right direction again. This can obviously be difficult but if you start with small steps then you will get there. For example, you may just go off to read a book in a coffee shop, but that's still better than nothing at all. If you continue with a slow, simple approach then you can keep connected with the world around you without becoming socially isolated or overly depressed.
It's certainly not unusual for you to try and struggle with depression straight after a break up. Try to do your best though to not let things get the best of you and drag you down.
