Who's going to host the party?
Traditionally the maid of honour tends to plan the shower party. But today, anything goes and it is perfectly acceptable for both family and friends to work together to organize, host and share the cost of the wedding shower.
When to have your party
The bride and family members will already be busy preparing for the actual wedding. Therefore, it's best to have it quite far in advance of the wedding, usually about six weeks beforehand.
Not many wedding showers are a surprise these days. You should inform the bride in advance of the date the party is being held. Why not have it on a Saturday day-time as a lunch in a restaurant or a garden tea-party on the lawn.
Who should be invited
Relatives and close friends including neighbours and work colleagues. It is wise to keep the numbers low as large parties tend to split-off into smaller groups.
You will no doubt be organizing party games for your guests to scream and laugh at, but you don't want anyone missing out of the fun do you? Therefore, a good number is about 10-20 people. This way, everyone should be able to interact with each other.
Deciding on a theme
As with the actual wedding, it is wise to choose a theme before sending out the invitations. The theme can then be used throughout the shower and incorporated in with the invitations, decorations, favors and refreshments.
A kitchen theme is always a good one as there are so many kitchen items and accessories to buy. Having said that there are dozens to pick and choose from.
The host knows the bride well and will surely fit a theme around either what the bride and groom need, or their lifestyle. For example if the happy couple are both into health and fitness, then a fitness theme could be an option.
Food, favors, games and thank you cards
Food: The location and theme of your shower party would determine the type of food you will supply. Are you having a garden tea-party? Then scones and sandwiches blend in with that theme. If you were having a wine party, then cheese, crackers and small nibbles would suffice.
Favors: These aren't that necessary really. My guess is that your having favors at your wedding anyway. Nevertheless, some people like to give shower favors to their guests as a way of saying thank-you.
Games: Everyone should be included in the shower games. Shower party games are a great ice-breaker for people to get to know each other. Games can include bridal shower bingo as this is always a big hit as is 'what's in the bag (memory game).
Thank You Cards: Normally a simple 'thank-you' was enough, but today, with showers being larger and guests busier, a personal note is the only way to make sure that sincere appreciation is expressed.

A lot of planning and organising is involved in preparing for a bridal shower party. However, it is always worth it for your guests to have a great fun time and the bride and groom receive lovely practical gifts for their hobby or their home.
