The Death Of Interest Based Cable Channels

Think back to when cable TV first appeared, could you remember how different it was back then? Going back about 20 years ago, cable TV had quite a few differences compared to what we have now.
The biggest difference that I notice is the fact that most of the different channel options were networks that consisted of very niche programming. No matter what your area of interest, you could find a network whose television lineup consisted exclusively of a certain niche.
I want to use the channels Bravo and A&E for examples, both of these channels focused on the niche of fine arts and you could easily flick to these channels to get a guaranteed niche viewing. However, I have noticed that this is sadly not the case anymore. These channels have introduced reality TV and regularly air shows that focus on other types of interest, as have many other once niche channels.
The best examples of this change in behaviour are VH1 and MTV. Both were proud to announce that their channel would show nothing but music videos.
These days, you'd be hard pressed to tune into either one of these stations to see a music video being broadcast. In fact, I can't even remember the last time I saw one on either channel.
They are now showing so many reality TV shows that you might not even recognise what channel you are tuned into if you had to guess. Shows such as Rock of Love and MTV's Jersey Shore dominate the programme schedule.
There are a few stations out there like the Game Show network which focus on targeted programming - game shows in this case. Even this channel, though, is veering into new territory as a planned new reality series will follow the life of the Newlywed Game host.
I hope that most of these channels that have digressed will eventually turn on their heels and head back to the strong roots that enabled them to grow so well to begin with.
