Campfires Or A Hotel: Monterey California
Go to: Previous Article Next Article
I hate camping. My wife doesn't. I want to stay home. My wife doesn't. So, like any self-respecting man, I do what my wife wants, which means I go camping and I get out of the house on weekends when I'd much rather stay put and stay plugged into my laptop. Now, my wife likes to save money -- and so do I. This means when we beat back the traffic and get out of San Francisco, we have one money-saving tactic in mind: camping.
We never have an agenda. We have no itinerary. We simply have a checklist of essential items we need to bring and that's it. Oh, and we have a map. Not a GPS unit, not some iPhone app, but an old-fashioned, paper and laminate map. If it was good enough for Lewis and Clark, it's good enough for us. Of course, we do bring a few modern conveniences that would have made the lads envious, like flashlights, portable stoves and the like.
Now, that may sound like we pack heavy, but we don't. Mind you, we're not light packers, but we bring just enough to make the camping bearable and the sightseeing phenomenal. We facilitate all this using our trusty SUV, so, yes go ahead and pass judgment, but when you have a family and don't want to invest in a mini-van, you'll see. Whatever you decide to bring, be sure you bring a nifty propane grill -- you will thank me for it. Remember, no propane grill means no hot food. You like hot food, don't you?
While we camp, I confess, all I think about is a hotel. Yes, I like to save money, but I am man of many contradictions. I like to be pampered. By the time i start to long for a hotel Monterey California is not far off. Once we hit Salinas, I'm already sneaking searches on my iPhone to find an available room. Mind you, I don't start to cave until about the four day of roughing it. This gives my wife enough time in the wild and gives me plenty of time to complain a blue streak about everything.
Come day five, we've seen all the scenic glory along the PCH and we've eaten our share of hot dogs and hamburgers. By that time, I suspect my wife has had enough. She never complains about our inevitable hotel stay. In fact, she is the first one in the shower and the first in line and the continental breakfast. Of course, it's me that's the one who can't hack it in the wild. Alas.
