Costa Rica: Friendly Folk and Cheap Car Rentals

It is generally a pleasure to speak about the Costa Rican folk, and I do so from first hand experience living in a small college city in the mountains of Costa Rica for four years like I did. When vacationing in Costa Rica, your hosts, the Costa Rica people are decidedly relaxed, friendly, and contented in spite of what initially seems to be imbedded poverty.
If poverty is related to private indebtedness, and while there's obviously real sub-existence level poverty, most of what you see is not truly poverty but simply a more straightforward, frequently debt free life-style where relative day to day liberty and happiness is the true measure of the society. One global agency who rates factors such as happiness, expounded in their last survey that Costa Rica is the happiest country on the planet!
One definite word of warning. Do not swim in the water at the beach unless you personally know for certain they don't seem to be polluted or contaminated. Iinsincere outlines, nebulous wording, and advertising/promotion propaganda are absolutely not to be trusted in this instance as raw sewage is definitely a problem on some beaches.
These issues are not exclusive to Costa Rica. Hey, I used to body surf in Santa Monica and Venice "both of these beaches have a history of septic contamination. In fact , now I hate to think what might have been lurking in the sea right where I spent important time body surfing!
The majority of these famous west coast beaches in Costa Rica are nothing except a giant septic system. So unless you want to swim in a septic system, my advice is to go to another beach. If it is close to a hotel, it is usually a natural septic system or better yet an ordinary sewage treatment plant. Sad but true and don't believe otherwise because you see some fools are swimming out surfing out there. Staying at a classy resort hotel on, near, or overlooking the beaches is a different story completely and a great treat if you swim in the pools!
If you decide that Costa Rica may not be what you were expecting you may want to rent a car Italy for an European excitement. Afterall, Italy has 60% of the world's classic art.
