Getting to Ponta du Oura, is not all together easy and simple and you can't get there by flying even if you have your own plane. It is remote and at the end of a deep sandy track of some 40 kilometers at the southernmost point of Mozambique, where the border with South Africa is met in northern Kwa Zulu Natal. It is some 630 kilometers from Johannesburg.
So, what is so difficult in reaching Ponta? Well, for a start you need to decide in what vehicle you are going to tackle the trip and if you are to stay in self catering accommodation, it means that you will need to tow a trailer loaded with your foodstuff. If you are going to travel by ordinary automobile, you will only be able to reach the border and leave your car there due to the nature of the Mozambique roads or tracks in the South which are deep sand tracks.
If you are to travel by 4x4, not to worry, you'll be OK! Also travelling from Johannesburg, you need to allow for at least three hours more travelling time than you would normally need because the Pondoland roads from Jozini dam onwards is poor with many road works and deviations - also you need to clear the border post.
Accommodation Ponta do Ouro, awaits you at the end of the track from the border in the form of a beach house that you have rented. You, however, also had a choice of camping, staying in a hotel, a lodge or self catering chalets in making your final decision on accommodation. As you are a party of two families travelling with two 4x4's one towing a trailer and the other a boat, you actually made a wise decision in renting a beach house as that provides ample and cost effective accommodation for two families.
