Italians are proud of their heritage. Consequently, many cities make much ado about their Italian heritage. Like Chinatown, most major American metropolitan areas have a Little Italy where the curious and hungry can get a slice of pizza, a fine plate of pasta, or a pound of finely sliced prosciutto. Chicago, New York, even Newark conjure images of Mama Italia, but what about San Francisco? Unfortunately, not many people associate the City by the Bay with a sizable Italian influence. They, of course, would be wrong. The Paris of the West does indeed have a sizable Italian population centered in the Little Italy of North Beach.
A spoonful of delicious gelato at Caffe Roma, a foamy cappuccino at Caffe Trieste, or a rich cannoli at any of the many delis -- you are never far from a taste of Italy. Though navigating the seven square miles of public and private transportation might take more than a few minutes, the spirit and flavor of Italy abound. A taste of Italy is only minutes away anywhere in San Francisco.
Within proximity to Jackson Square, the Financial District (home of the famous Transamerica Pyramid), Chinatown, Russian Hill, and Fisherman's Wharf -- North Beach is a coveted a place to be. And did I mention the food? Enjoy the ravioli at Fior d'Italia or the marinara at Kuleto's. On practically every street corner there are fabulous cafes and bistros to take in the unique sights and sounds of the city.
Painted Victorians (known as painted ladies) and three-story walk-ups comprise the majority of buildings in North Beach. Though parking can be problematic, especially during the peak tourist season (May through August) if you are willing to pay your can be assured of find public parking structures. Just be prepared to do a bit of walking, or if you are only traveling with a mile or so, consider the MUNI rail or bus lines.
San Francisco has been a tourist destination for decades. Over its long, rugged history it has embraced a wide variety of immigrants from around the world. Like New York or Chicago or Boston, San Francisco has nurtured and celebrated pocket communities to its lasting renown. From Chinatown to North Beach, the City That Knows How certainly does.
