Travel Tips For The Adventurer In You

Every traveler knows how important it is to plan the trip in the most detailed manner. Here are some simple yet effective tips that you should know before heading out to your point of destination. Some of these, when things go wrong can save you enormous grief!

First, store scanned copies of your passport, ATM & credit cards, plane tickets, identification cards, and traveler's checks in a web-based e-mail account. Include vital information such as emergency numbers for lost/stolen cards. This eases up your application for new cards mid-trip should life take a turn for you. Do keep photocopies for each one and keep them somewhere in your luggage separately from your originals.

While we are on the "proactive information" side of things, if you're not familiar with the currency and measurement systems of the country that you're going to visit, it helps to bring a pocket calculator and even a tape measure. If you wear eyeglasses, bring your prescription along with you in case you break or lose them or at least as one of the scanned documents.

When you get to packing travel items keep the following in mind. If you want to be economical on space and time, that is, not carry extra weight nor waste time doing repeated searches, then pack your clothing in a systematic fashion. It helps to organize them by type (shirts, jeans, underwear, etc.) into clear plastic bags.

Plastic bags aren't just for space-saving. They serve another purpose when it comes to luggage inspections at the airport. Custom officers need not rummage through it since the contents are easily seen. If they need to pull everything out, re-packing is a breeze! And of course, you're not obliged to bring your whole wardrobe with you. Know which events are possible during your trip. Are you going to a rock concert? An island? A golf tournament? As much as possible, select pieces that can double-up with your various outfits. After all, the journey is for you and not your wardrobe!

Since 2006, liquids, gels, and aerosols have been a particular security issue. There are some exceptions especially for medical products and health supplements. Expensive liquids such as alcohol and perfume might be confiscated, so take time to find out what amounts of liquids you can bring along with you.

Try to split up your valuables as much as possible. Avoid storing them in the same compartment because if you lose your luggage, you'll lose everything. Keep them in different safe places of your bags and wallet during packing. Travelers are not strangers to delays, so it is wise to pack a bag of nuts or trail mix and a few energy bars to fill your belly when hunger strikes. These types of foods keep you on the go without the need to purchase strange or potentially unsafe food during unexpected detours.

One of the common mistakes that many travelers make is scrimping on purchasing the right luggage. It is a matter of personal choice if you want to buy cheaper suitcases or trolley bags, but are you assured that these can protect your belongings from getting damaged while you're on way to your destination? Many globetrotters are now facing the challenges of increasing luggage fares and decreasing domestic carry-on quotas.

If you travel a lot or travel with expensive equipment when you do, invest in some high-tech light-weight polycarbonate luggage. My favorite over the years has become Rimowa, a German company. They use virgin polycarbonate and that ensures remarkable strength and durability. Plus it has a neat history stretching back more than 100 years.

Often called the "luggage with the grooves" (just like the aluminum planes that originally inspired the last 60 years of Rimowa's innovation,) I love that it has been tested to handle temperatures from +250F to -150F by third party inspection associations. Not that I have been in such severe temperatures myself, but I have spent many days watching the monsoons seemingly empty the skies of water in Indonesia, feeling the burn of the searing heat in Australian deserts, and anxiously waited in many an airport for luggage to survive some of the biggest tests of travel--the baggage handlers.

With any of Rimowa's lines, the adventurer in you will have one less detail to worry about. Your luggage and precious goods will survive the magnificent cold and crystal clear cold nights in Alaska, Vancouver or Siberia. They will sail easily past the hot mystery of the Taj Mahal and perhaps even help bring with you back home, a little of the excitement of the streets of Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Bangkok or Radjastan.
